About BCCRCDC
The Coalition Mission Statement
The mission of the Burlington Camden County Regional Chronic Disease Coalition (BCCRCDC) is to reduce the number of Burlington and Camden County residents from being diagnosed with and dying from cancer. Comprehensive cancer control is a collaborative process by which a community and its partners pool resources to reduce illness and death due to cancer through prevention, early detection, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliation. The Office of Cancer Control & Prevention (OCCP) participates in the national efforts of the CDC to establish state-based comprehensive cancer control plans and conduct prevention of cancer risk factors, enhance early detection of preventable cancers and facilitate survivorship measures.
The Burlington Camden County Regional Chronic Disease Coalition is an organization dedicated to helping families and communities lead cancer free lives. The Coalition promotes cancer screening and early detection, along with providing educational programs to members of our community. BCCRCDC encourages proper nutrition and physical activity to help combat obesity, which is a risk factor of at least six different cancers.
Additional risk factors include:
Alcohol use, which has been linked to cancers: of the mouth, throat (pharynx), voice box (larynx), esophagus, liver, colon and rectum, and breast. Alcohol may also increase the risk of cancers of the pancreas and stomach. For each of these cancers, the more alcohol you drink, the higher your cancer risk.
Tobacco use, in addition to lung, causes many more types of cancer including: larynx (voice box), mouth, esophagus, throat, bladder, kidney, liver, stomach, pancreas, colon and rectum, and cervix, as well as acute myeloid leukemia. People who use smokeless tobacco (snuff or chewing tobacco) have increased risks of cancers of the mouth, esophagus, and pancreas.
